Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome
ITBFS occurs as a result of friction between the ITB (which runs down the outside of the leg from hip to knee) and the outside of the knee joint.
Patients with ITBFS often complain of an ache over the outside of the knee that usually comes on at the same stage in a run/ride. They may also have tight and painfull trigger points along the line of the muscle, weakness in the flexors and extensors of the knee and also in the hip abductors and trigger points in the gluteals. Excessive pronation of the foot may also predispose you to developing this problem.
Treatment of the condition involves addressing each of the predisposing factors mentioned above and may involve massage, trigger point therapy, dry needling, electrotherapy, exercise programs, training modification and orthotic therapy.
